A task force of fire and police investigators is searching for a thrill-seeking serial arsonist who has been burning trash bins, vehicles and residences on Lompoc’s south side for at least 10 months.
Investigators have tied the culprit, or culprits, to 27 fires that have caused more than $100,000 worth of damage since September, said Battalion Fire Chief Stan Hart, head of the nine-member task force.
Hart, who said the arsonist may have set even more fires, said the most disturbing aspects of the incidents are “his blatant disregard and concern for other people’s safety and his potential escalation to larger targets.”

Scott Stephen, a mechanic at Dave’s Automotive in Santa Maria and an Hancock College alumnus, was recently named a national ASE Master Automotive Technician of the Year.
Stephen has 42 Automotive Service Excellence certifications, and is now studying with a goal of becoming a teacher.

With its last out of the game at the plate and trailing a run, Village Hills was staring elimination directly in its face.
Having runners stationed at second and third, Village Hill’s Alex Aguilar sent a single up the middle to complete the comeback, defeating Lompoc National 6-3 in the 11-12 year old District 65 Little League Tournament held at Hal Sagerman Memorial Field.
Down 3-2 to start the top of the sixth, Village Hills’ chances of continuing its tournament run was on life support. After a strikeout, Fletcher Smith worked a walk to give VH a pulse. A sacrifice bunt by Michael Huggins and walk to Josh Miller setup Aguilar’s heroics.

PCPA offers outstanding musical comedy
On opening night at the PCPA production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” there was one serious flaw. That was the fact that the show opened in front of a small crowd.
Several regulars at the Marian Theater, for some reason, did not show up. Perhaps it was because they were not familiar with the show.

Road needs to reopen Santa Barbara County and Vandenberg Air Force Base are going to receive the government’s economic stimulas funds for roads, repair and improvements. Rep. Lois Capps is quoted as saying this funding will create jobs and help our local economy. So, are the county and VAFB finally going to punt the political football for the last time, and reopen the Lompoc-Casmalia Road? For the good of the people, this important route for daily travelers has been closed for approximately 10 years. No excuses this time, right? Y. Castro/Lompoc
