Banks is LPL dive champ

5/5/04 Cabrillo's Alex Banks performed consistently in his 11-dive series to win the Los Padres League boys 1-meter diving championship Tuesday at Cuesta College.

Banks, a senior who was second behind now-graduated teammated Kevin Skahill last year, scored 267 points.

Cabrillo's Phillip Lacey was second at 236.1, followed by Ryan Pace of Santa Ynez (204.95), with Cabrillo's Brice Ogan (204.85) and Joe Zucker (181.8) fourth and fifth.

In the girls' 1-meter, Courtney Packett of Nipomo had a 299.9 11-dive series to win. She was followed by Lesley Morgan (244.05), Courtney Lanphear (231.8) and Sam Metcalf (216.3) of Cabrillo.

"Our divers were excellent," said CHS coach Jim Thompson. "And the conditions were great. I'm very happy with my team."

None of the LPL divers posted CIF automatic qualifying marks at Cuesta Tuesday. But most are expected to be allowed to compete in the Southern Section Division 3 meet on Wednesday May 12 because of the scarcity of divers in the SoSec.

The CIF will release lists of qualifiers on the cifss.org website on Sunday.
