Barbecue set for Saturday

The Knights of Columbus barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Vons parking lot on North H Street will offer a choice of dinners: tri-tip or a half chicken, salad, beans, and garlic bread.


National Pollution Prevention Week coming

Next week is National Pollution Prevention Week, an opportunity for individuals, businesses and government to promote pollution prevention activities and achievements and to commit to new actions.

This week, the City of Lompoc's Solid Waste Division has the following activities planned: all week long residents can call to make an appointment to obtain free compost for residential use, and public education information on the city's pollution prevention programs will be on display in the City Hall lobby. The City Council will recognize the importance of pollution prevention by issuing a Pollution Prevention Week proclamation and holding a reception at its regular meeting Tuesday. And from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, city staff will be at Farmers Market handing out used oil recycling containers, tote bags, refrigerator magnets, Frisbees and other give-aways in order to promote recycling and pollution prevention.

Soccer Shoot scheduled

The annual Lompoc Elks Soccer Shoot will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Ryon Park football field west for beginning, free registration. This event is for all youths-age 14 and under and they do not have to have soccer-playing experience.

Awards will be presented to first, second, and third place in each age group. First place winners will go forward to the district shoot in Santa Maria on Oct. 7.

Free car wash held

The Lompoc Valley Community Youth Center, 537 North K St., is having a car wash fund-raiser from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The car wash is free, however, donations will be accepted. Proceeds will go to support the operation of the center.

Fund-raiser festival held

The Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation will hold its first annual North County Family Fun Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Discovery Museum, 705 S. McClelland, in Santa Maria. Come enjoy lunch, drinks, music and fun, as well as a silent auction, and special arts and crafts, face painting, games and activities for the kids.

Cake decorating to be taught

Sign up to learn basic and specialized skills from Arlene Carlon, and create cake decorations for any occasion. Beginning level classes are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, from Sept. 19 to Oct. 24. Advanced level classes are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, from Nov. 7 to Dec. 12. Both classes will be held at the Anderson Recreation Center kitchen, 125 W. Walnut Ave. Fee is $30 for city residents, $36 for noncity residents. For more information contact the Lompoc Parks and Recreation Department at 875-8100.
