In the final dual meet of the regular season, the coaches for both Cabrillo and St. Joseph swim teams were pleased with the performances of their teams.
The Cabrillo girls squad defeated St. Joseph 104-72, while the Cabrillo boys breezed past the under manned St. Joseph team, 115-37.
“I'm pretty happy with today,” said St. Joseph coach Jennifer Best. “It was a big improvement over last year against Cabrillo.”
“We had half our team missing because of band and choir,” said Cabrillo girls coach Scott Alvarez. “Everybody pretty much got to pick their events.”
That included a swimmer who competed in an event she never raced before.
“Sarah Ur won the 100 breaststroke,” explained Alvarez. “That's the first time she ever swam it. And she was real happy with that. That's what all the noise was about.”
St. Joseph received several outstanding performances from the girls team. Erica Brannon won two individual events and teamed up for two relay wins.
Brannon won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:16.78 and later took the 100 backstroke in 1:01.56.
“Erica is coming off senior nationals and now is back into real heavy training working towards her summer goals and CIF,” explained Best. “I know the kids that were swimming in club right now are really sore. But she won today in a CIF qualifying time-not her best time, but a qualifying time.”
“She's just a freshman,” Best continued. “That is hard work paying off.”
Maddie Mastrup won the 200 freestyle (2:04.92) and the 100 butterfly, which was a CIF consideration time. Both Mastrup and Brannon raced in the 200 free relay and 400 free relay with Lauren Addington and Maggie Evans. The first time all four competed together.
“Maddie went to junior nationals,” Best explained, “and she was not available to us until recently. Today she swam in her 200 free in a qualifying time. Qualifying was 2:07, so she beat the mark by three seconds, but she was five seconds off her best time.”
Alvarez was pleased with the time of Sarah Munar in the 100 freestyle. She won with a time of1:05.85.. Katherine Nelson took the 50 free and Andrea DeFillipi outlasted the competition in the 500 free.
Ur's winning time in the breaststroke was 1:24.86. Alvarez joked with her that she had qualified for CIF, eliciting a loud scream. The actual qualifying time in that event is 1:14.30.
Conquistadores swimmers won seven of the ten boys events, including Cody Ogen in the 200 free (2:08.5) and Garrett Darling in the 50 free (26.5). Patrick Robinson took the 100 free (55.72), while Greg Herrera won the 100 backstroke (1:11.33) and Spencer Copeland was victorious in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.18).
In addition, the Conqs won the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.
The best showing for the Knights boys team came in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, which were both won by Jeremiah Palmerston. Both times, 2:17.03 in the 200 IM and 1:01.57 in the 100 butterfly, were CIF qualifiers.
Freshman Ryan Janzen took the 500 free for St. Joseph (6:16.87).
“Ryan Janzen is a freshman, and he's really worked hard this year and dropped loads of time throughout the season,” said Best. “I can hardly wait for next year with him.”
Janzen competed in three events, all towards the end of the meet.
“His stuff was back to back to back,” Best explained. “He did the 500 free, immediately after that was the 200 free relay, then immediately after that was the 100 back.
“He was pretty much right on his times, she continued. “He should be dead right now, he shouldn't be that close to his times. He's already improved so much time this year, and we haven't even rested yet.”
Both Alvarez and Best are pointing towards the Los Padres League prelims which take place next Saturday at Paul Nelson Pool in Santa Maria. But first comes the Santa Barbara County Championships, an invitational featuring talent from throughout the county.
Lompoc girls 91, Santa Maria 43
At Paul Nelson Pool, the Braves had several outstanding performances. Isabel Stone won the 50 freestyle (28:15) and the 100 backstroke (1:15.24), while teaming up with Kacie Dunlavey, Denee Lane and Barbara Grobowski in winning the 200 medley relay (2:12.19).
Dunlavey won the 100 free (1:00.38) and the 100 breaststroke (1:19.62). Lane was victorious in the 200 individual medley (2:47.44) while Ashley Borges took the 500 free (6:29.6).
Meanwhile, Santa Maria freshman Lanessa Horton-Scott stayed perfect for the season. She won the 200 freestyle in 2:08 and the 100 butterfly in 1:09. Her winning butterfly time was a consideration mark for the CIF Southern Section Preliminary Meet. She has swam an automatic qualifying time in the 500 freestyle. Alyssa Cox placed second in 1:30 in the 100 breaststroke.
Antonio McNeil doubled for Santa Maria's boys. He took the 200 freestyle in 1:58 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:08. His 200 freestyle time was an automatic qualifier for the Southern Section meet.
The Saints' other boys winners were Kevin Pasko in the 100 breaststroke (57.70) and the 400 relay squad of Giorgio Bonacchini, Pasko, Matt Gin and McNeil.
Lompoc completed the dual meet portion of its schedule with a 6-4 record, 4-1 in the LPL, second in league. Several swimmers will skip today's Santa Barbara County Meet at Paul Nelson Pool in Santa Maria, due to the Lompoc prom, but will return next Saturday for the LPL prelims.
Santa Maria's boys are 2-3 in the LPL. The girls are 0-5.
