The children's Summer Reading Program at the Village Library has its official start at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, with live entertainment by musician Craig Newton. Parents and students should stop by to register and get the reading logs. The program ends July 25.
Library Branch Manager Norma McIntire announces that all sale paperbacks are now priced at 50 cents. Used magazines will now be 50 cents, as well. The special “discount” books sales on the third Saturday will be discontinued.
The library's new, expanded schedule, effective July 1, will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday; and 1 to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The committee will sponsor doughnuts and juice from 10 to 11 a.m. on the first Monday, July 2, and cookies and punch from 6 to 7 p.m. on the first Thursday, July 5. Stop by to celebrate these restored hours.
The ‘Growing Tree” bulletin board honors those businesses and residents who have supported the 2007 fundraising campaign. Professional offices that contributed include Dr. Jared McCune, chiropractor Jim Hall, Dr. Weinstock and the Drs. Heath. Other major contributors include the Quady family and Howard Granz. Dozens of individuals and families made contributions ranging from $10 to $500.
Lastly, the community appreciates the large anonymous donation that will be used to kick off the fundraising campaign for the next four years.
County budget talks: During the next few weeks, the Board of Supervisors will be looking at the budget. Residents are urged to contact Supervisor Brooks Firestone, the 3rd District representative, to ask him and the other supervisors to support an increase in the county library budget for the upcoming budget cycle, especially for the unincorporated areas like Vandenberg Village. Stop by the library to pick up contact information and some “talking points.”
Buena Vista Elementary: Staff announces that Buena Vista will be back at its regular campus for the start of the next school year, Aug. 22. The office will be open on Aug. 3. Staff appreciates the community's support during this semester at its temporary campus at La Mesa.
Long-time resident and school employee Jane Daly suggests that families who have quality children's clothing such as long pants and shirts consider donating items to the schools for use during ‘emergencies' in the nurse's office.
Cabrillo High School: Principal Betty McCallum reminds all residents that the Cabrillo campus will be completely off limits this summer as work is being done throughout the campus under the Measure N funding. The less interference with the workers, the faster the job can get completed.
Vandenberg Village Association: The next meeting is 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 20.
Caltrans: The crews have been working to clear the median areas. Residents are reminded to make sure articles in their open-bed trucks are securely fastened so the roadway does not get so littered.
Village residents have asked Caltrans to consider some type of landscaping for the on/off ramps in areas that are presently filled with weeds and ruts. Any community group which would like to sponsor a landscaping program should contact the Caltrans office.
