Chumash expert to speak at mission
Jan Timbrook, an expert in Chumash studies and ethnobotany, will share glimpses into her new book “Chumash Ethnobotany: Plant Knowledge Among the Chumash People of Southern California” from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Visitor Center at La Purisima Mission, 2295 Purisima Road.
She will give insight into the ways in which some 20,000 native Californians interacted with, thought about, affected and were affected by their environment.

The following textbooks are being recommended for adoption by the Lompoc Unified School District for use at El Camino, Lompoc Valley and Vandenberg Middle Schools: For Vandenberg Middle School only: “Introduction to Horticulture,” Fourth Edition, by Schroeder, Seagle, Felton, Ruter, Kelley and Krewer, published by Pearson, Prentice Hall, 2004. For El Camino, Lompoc Valley and Vandenberg Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade science classes: “California Life Science,” by Coolidge-Stolz, Cronkite, Jenner, Pasachoff and Wysession, published by Pearson, Prentice Hall, 2008. “California Physical Science,” by Frank, Jones, Miaoulis, Miller and Pasachoff, published by Pearson, Prentice Hall, 2008.
Copies of the books may be previewed at the Lompoc Public Library through Oct. 9. Adoption of the textbooks will be on the Oct. 9 agenda for the Board of Education. The board meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Education Center Boardroom, 1301 North A St.
Free organ concert planned for Saturday
Margaret Martin Kvamme, an organist from the Los Gatos, will perform a free concert at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 925 North F St.
Reception and awards ceremony set
