Around the Lompoc Valley

SJ, SY open CIF tennis playoffs at home

After battling through the regular season and Los Padres League schedule for most of the season, the boys tennis teams from St. Joseph High and Santa Ynez were rewarded with first-round home matches in the CIF Southern Section Playoffs.

The Knights and Pirates will both begin Division IV action at home at 3 p.m. on Thursday, according to brackets released by the Southern Section office on Monday.

Larry Popkin's Santa Ynez squad, the No. 1 seed from the LPL, opens Division IV play against Mayfair of Lakewood, while Patrick Ortiz's St. Joseph opens against San Gabriel Valley League No. 2 entry Downey.

In other Division IV action, LPL No. 3 Lompoc - featuring league individual champ Alex Jensen - opens with a wild-card match today at home against Norwalk, the No. 4 out of the Suburban League; Templeton travels to Glenn High of Norwalk for another Division IV wild-card match.

In Division II action, PAC-7 League champ San Luis Obispo, the No. 3 overall seed in the division, opens with Pacific View No. 2 Rio Mesa on Thursday; PAC-7 runner-up Arroyo Grande was forced on the road for a first-round matchup against Arcadia, the No. 2 out of the Pacific League, while Atascadero travels to Prep League champ Pasadena Poly.

Nipomo opens Division II play today at 3 p.m. in a wild-card road match at Glendale.

All five of the area's CIF-bound volleyball teams sit in the Division II bracket, with LPL champ Santa Ynez hosting PAC-7 runner-up San Luis Obispo on Friday night in a first-round matchup.

St. Joseph takes its LPL runner-up status on the road to Villa Park to open the playoffs, while Righetti travels to Santa Ana, and PAC-7 champ Arroyo Grande hosts San Marcos.

The brackets for baseball and softball will be released on Monday, following the conclusion of their regular seasons.




Parent's Nite Out offered

Gymnastics North is hosting another Parent's Nite Out on Friday May 9. The event is offered for kids aged 4 through 13 and will include gymnastics games and fun and Pizza.

The event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30, and there will be a pre-registration discount if signed up by Thursday, May 8.

Lompoc Parks & Rec Summer programs

The City of Lompoc Parks And Recreation Department will offer several sports camps and programs for youths and teens this Summer.

Spaces for the camps are limited so pre-registration is suggested. All sign-ups will be on a first-come first-served basis.

Spudball - Will teach the fundamentals of baseball for ages 3-4 and 5-6. Program will run from June 9 through July 19.

Little Stars Basketball Camp - Teaches the fundamentals of basketball for ages 4-7. Camp runs from July 7 through July 17.

Little Kickers Camp - Teaches the fundamentals of soccer for ages 3-4 and 5-6 from July 28 through August 7.

Volleyball Camp at Cabrillo High - For ages 7-17, this camp will be led by the coaching staff at Cabrillo. Camp runs from June 16 through June 19.

Wrestling Camp at Cabrillo High - The coaching staff from Cabrillo High will teach the fundamentals of wrestling at Cabrillo for ages 7-17. Camp runs from June 16 through 19.

Soccer Camp at Cabrillo High - The fundamentals of soccer will be taught by the coaching staff of Cabrillo to ages 7-17. Camp runs June 16 through June 19.




Parks and Rec leagues

The City of Lompoc Parks and Recreation Department is offering the following leagues for summer.

Adult Volleyball - Coed

League will be held on Tuesdays, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Anderson Recreation Center Gym beginning June 10.

Registration will be taken until May 23. Fees are $238 per team with resident discount, $263 per team regular fee, $31 per team PMBF.

There will be a mandatory manager's meeting on June 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Anderson Recreation Center.

Adult Softball - Men's, women's, church and coed leagues

Leagues will begin on June 1 for coed leagues and June 4 for men's leagues. Games are played at Ryon and Thompson Parks on Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Registration will be taken until May 16. Fees for men's leagues are $445 per team resident discount, $470 per team regular fee. Fees for coed leagues are $462 per team resident discount, $487 per team regular fee. There will be a $42 per team fee for PMBF.

There will be a mandatory manager's meeting on May 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Anderson Recreation Center.

Youth Tennis Lessons

For ages 10 and up. Lessons will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ryon Park Tennis Courts with instructor Dennis Laws.

Classes will begin on May 5, June 2, July 7, August 4.

Fees are $50 for residents and $60 regular fee.

Golf Instruction - Juniors

For ages 7 to 16. Lessons will be on Thursdays 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. or Saturdays 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the La Purisima Golf Course with instructor Ken Zimet.

Classes begin May 1 or May 3; June 5 or June 7; July 3 or July 5; August 2 or August 7.

Fees are $60 per resident and $72 regular fee.

Golf Instruction - Adults

For ages 17 and up. Lessons will be on Thursdays 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. or Saturdays 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the La Purisima Golf Course with instructor Ken Zimet.

Classes begin May 1 or May 3; June 5 or June 7; July 3 or July 5; August 2 or August 7.

Fees are $80 per resident and $96 regular fee.

Pacific

Wolf Pack 7, VAFB Hawks 0

The Wolf Pack tied the Hawks for first place with a forfeit win.

Pizza Garden 21, DJ's/Better Beds 8

With 12 runs in the sixth, Pizza Garden put the game away. Dan McGahey had a home run, double and single with six runs batted in. Aaron Mendoza and Matt Pennewell had three RBIs each.

Atlantic

LPOA 19, Jasper's Misfits 6

Andrew White hit a grand slam home run to lead the way. Ray Clancy added a home run and two singles with three RBIs. LPOA scored seven in the third and six in the fourth.

Los Amigos 21, Valley POD 8

Los Amigos scored seven runs in the first then seven in the fourth to offset a seven run fourth by POD. Trevor Baird had four RBIs with a double and three singles and Tony Durham had a homer, triple and double for three runs batted in.

Santa Ynez Glass 20, V&J Trucking 5

The game was tied 5-5 in the fifth, when Santa Ynez exploded for 14 runs. Dan Jacobson had a home run and two singles with two RBIs and Chris Floyd added two RBIs with a triple and single.

Thursday, May 1

Indian

Brothers 19, J's Bad Habits 18

J's scored in every inning, but the Brothers scored eight runs in each the second and fifth to get the win. Larry Williams had four runs batted in with a home run and a single. Dave Fundingsland and Rich Navarro both had three RBIs.

Strike Force 13, Goodfellas 11

Ron Heron had a home run and a single to bring in four runs. Justin Bailey hit a homer, double and single with two RBIs and Dwayne Wilks homered as well.

Arctic

Werner Construction 25, Santori Woodworking 4

Werner put the hammer down with 12 runs in the first and nailed Santori for the win. Brett Howren hit a home run and two doubles to knock in six runs. Trevor Baird added five RBIs with a double and a single.

LP Hackers 19, Evolution 15

The Hackers scored six times in the fifth for a come from behind win. Josh Hedrick had a home run and single with three RBIs and Marcus Fox had three RBIs with a home run. John Esham added three runs batted in with a triple and a double.

Sunday, May 4

Coed Oak

Whistle Stop 7, Cooters 0

Whistle Stop won on a forfeit.

Answer Back 22, Coast Hills 17

Jose Salas hit for the cycle and added a single for seven runs batted in. Vince Villa added four RBIs with a double and three singles.

Coed Pine

La Familia 19, Dr. T's 8

With 11 runs in the first, La Familia was able to cruise to the win and pull to within one game of Dr. T's for first place. Manny Decierdo Jr. hit a grand slam and a single with four RBIs and David Soza Jr. added two RBIs with a home run and two singles.

Sushi Teri 16, The Rebels 15

After scoring nine runs in the first, Sushi Teri held on for the win. Nick Jansen had a triple and two singles with two RBIs. Carl Wilks hit a double and single.
