About Town for October 5, 2008

Family night planned Wednesday at LVMS

A Family Night will be held at Lompoc Valley Middle School beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

At 6:30 p.m., a short meeting will be held.

The book fair will be open in the library from 5:30 p.m. until closing. Parents, students and all other family members are invited. Hot dog dinners will be sold for $1 each.

The school band and the dance team will provide the entertainment and the California Junior Scholarship Federation will host a bake sale.

Middle School to compete for $20,000

Lompoc Valley Middle School will again participate in the Red Robin U-ACT Champion Program. The program encourages students to perform unbridled acts of kindness, to one another at school as well as giving back to their community.

The U-ACT program honors schools and individuals that demonstrate what it means to perform unbridled acts of kindness, in a nationwide contest. Schools recognized for students' good works can earn up to $20,000, and special school sprit night celebrations at local Red Robin restaurants.

Last year the middle school won an award and $500.




Youth basketball sign-ups to start

Register for the 2008-09 Cabrillo Youth Basketball season from 6 to

8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9; 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14; and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 18, in the CHS cafeteria, 4350 Constellation Road.

Early bird fees through Oct. 18 are $75 for one player, $105 for two players and $140 for three players. A $10 late fee will apply after these dates. A parent or guardian must be present to register. Space is limited.

Girls' teams will compete in the Lompoc Parks and Recreation Department Girls' League. Boys' teams play in the Cabrillo league. The season runs December through February.

Host Families sought for students

Host families are wanted for exchange students from Spain and China who are currently attending Cabrillo High School for the 2008-2009 school year. All students speak English, have medical insurance and pay for their own expenses.

Students attend classes all day and participate in high school activities. Host families provide room and board along with the American family life. Host families are always welcome to join in the fun.

Pinewood Derby workshop set

The Boys & Girls Club along with Lompoc Valley Police Activities League and Home Depot will be sponsoring a Pinewood Derby Workshop from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Boys and Girls Club, 1025 W. Ocean Ave.

Supplies will be provided to get a car ready for the Pinewood Derby which will be held at Anderson Recreation Center, Saturday, Nov. 1, at 125 West Walnut Ave.

Free hotdogs, chips and soda will be served for those who are participating.

Annual Craft Fair set for Saturday

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 570 Ladies Auxiliary will host its Annual Harvest Craft Fair, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Lompoc Veterans Memorial Building, 100 East Locust Ave. There will be crafters from Morro Bay to Santa Ynez, with many unique items and gift ideas. Door prizes will be given and food and drink will be available.
