Fundraiser barbecue scheduled Sunday

A benefit barbecue for Miguelito School teacher and longtime Lompoc resident, Nicki Manzo, who is battling a brain tumor, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, in the CoastHills Federal Credit Union parking lot, 1320 North H St. Tickets are available from the Miguelito School office, and by calling Markie at 742-2434. Walk up sales are also welcome.

A bake sale and raffle to win a basket of goodies also are planned on the day of the barbecue.

All proceeds will go toward aggressive, experimental treatments for Nicki at Duke University in North Carolina.

American Legion hosts holiday dinner

American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 125 will host a Thanksgiving dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at the Veterans Memorial Building, 100 East Locust Ave. The menu will be turkey, ham, greens, string beans, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy, candied yams, macaroni and cheese, rolls, cranberry sauce and dessert. Dinner will cost $8 per person.

Toys for Tots campaign kicks off Wednesday

The Marine Corps Reserve 2008 Toys for Tots campaign will kickoff Wednesday.

Toy collection boxes will be placed all over town, and donors are asked to give a new, unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more for children up to age 13.

The program provides toys for disadvantaged children in the Lompoc Valley. This year, toys for boys and girls from 7 to 13 years of age are especially needed.

Monetary donations are also welcomed. Checks can be made payable to Toys for Tots: Lompoc, and mailed to Dorothy Jackson Family Resource Center, 501

North W St., Lompoc, CA 93436, Attn: Toys for Tots.

Families may register their children for toys from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 and Thursday, Nov. 13 at the Veterans Memorial Building, 100 E. Locust Ave. Families need to bring identification for proof of residence, income record and birth records of the children. Families will be notified of the date and place of toy distribution when they register. Toys will be distributed from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 20.

Volunteers are also needed for assisting in registration and toy distribution. For more information or to volunteer, call Denise at 742-2943.




Youth football selling fundraising tickets

The Lompoc Valley Youth Football League will be selling tickets for a fundraiser raffle for a 2008 Honda Civic LX Coupe, $100 gift cards, $50 gas card and more, at Rose's Embroidery, 726 North H St. The raffle will be held Saturday at Lompoc Honda. For more information, call 588-6622.




Girls softball sign-ups to start

The Lompoc Girls Softball Early Bird registration will be from

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, while scholarship sign-ups for low-income players will be from

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22.

Regular registration will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9 and 16; Last-chance late registration will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, when no discounts will be granted.

All registration will be at VTC, 124 North I St.

Read-In to be held Saturday

Join Mayor Dick DeWees and other special guest readers for the Lompoc Public Library's 11th Annual Pajama Read-In, at 6 p.m. Saturday, in the Grossman Gallery inside the Lompoc Library, 501 East North Ave.

The event is open to parents and children of all ages. Other activities include a family read aloud, puppet making, free books and refreshments. Pajamas are optional.
