College Football

Taua Runs well in loss

Cabrillo graduate Vai Taua had another outstanding game for the University of Nevada Reno Wolfpack, but the team fell short losing to Hawaii 38-31.

The sophomore running back ran for 160 yards on 16 carries, including a 79-yard jaunt in the third quarter that tied the score at 17-all.

Taua is currently second in the Western Athletic Conference with 1,046 yards and is 10th in total offense.

The Wolpack (4-4, 2-2 WAC) have a bye this coming weekend. The next game will be on Friday, Nov. 7 at Fresno State. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 at 6 p.m.

Canley, Taua lead Conqs

Vandenberg Village Conqs 6,

With another shutout, the Conqs improved to 7-1 and won the league championship and earned a first round bye in the upcoming playoffs.

D'Artgnan Canley scored on a 19-yard touchdown run with five minutes remaining for the winning score. Toa Taua led the team in rushing with 88 yards on 12 carries.

The offensive line was led by Conner Hayes, Alfonso Grimes and Jacob Wong.

Defensively Taua made five tackles and recovered a muffed punt in the fourth quarter. Canley had a fourth quarter interception and made a late game-saving tackle.

Prep Golf

SJHS braves wind in win at Lompoc

Danielle Gillaspy carded a five-over 41 over nine holes in blustery conditions at La Purisima on Monday afternoon, helping the St. Joseph High golf team score a Los Padres League victory over Lompoc.

The Knights posted a team score of 266, while the host Braves shot a 350.

Kelsey Wong followed Gillaspy on the Knights' scoresheet with a 48, while Danika Cochiolo shot a 57, Marissa Gutierrez a 58 and Christy Mahan a 62.

A 62 was the low score of the day for the Braves, carded by Kayleigh Goethe; Jullieta Solis shot a 65, followed by Jocelyn Caudillo's 68, a 76 from Ali Wilson and Brittney Kowalewski's 79.

The final LPL mini-tournament of the season is Thursday, hosted by Santa Maria at Cypress Ridge.

Softball

Lompoc Softball Registration

Registration is coming for the Lompoc Girls Softball League. All sign-ups will be held at the VTC offices, 124 North I St.

Early Bird sign-ups, with a $5 discount will be on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Regular registration and scholarships will be available on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Scholarships are available to low income players - the fee will be based on income.

Other regular registration days will be held on Tuesdays, Dec. 9 and Dec. 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. and a new one - just added - on Tuesday, Dec. 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the VAFB Youth Center.

A last chance late registration day will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10.

The fee for all players is $100 with a $5 sibling discount and includes a $30 refundable fundraiser.

Lompoc Girls Softball is open to all girls ages 5 to 17 as of Jan. 1, 2009. A birth certificate is required at registration.
