Bulldogs receive honor, put-ups at luncheon

The main reason the Allan Hancock College football team defeated Ventura on Saturday, 30-12, after building up a 24-0 halftime lead was running back Telvin McMillian - who rushed for 191 yards and scored three touchdowns before the break.

He finished with 217 yards and became the third Bulldog running back to win the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable Male Athlete of the Week.

McMillian was not present to accept the award at the weekly luncheon held at Giavanni's Pizza in Orcutt, so his coach Kris Dutra picked up the award.

“This Telvin McMillian kid is a stud - he is going to be a great player,” Dutra said. “He reminds me of (former pro) Jamal Anderson who I played with at Moorpark.

“He is just going to get better and better - and Saturday he did a super job.”

Dutra was also responded to some kind words said about him and his program at the luncheon.

St. Joseph coach Mike Hartman has a lot of respect for the Hancock program.

“I've been going to the last couple Hancock games and I think you guys need to understand what a great job they do over there,” Hartman explained. “And they do it with local and out-of-state kids - Kris does a great job of mixing the two groups together.

“Watch them play and it's not tricky football, they just line up and say here we are. Everyone knows what the play is and the other team still can't stop them. All the success they have had is because they earned it.”

Longtime friend and Santa Maria football coach Mike Pope added his comments as well.

“Kids, let me tell you something,” he said, “if your opportunities aren't out there to go to a four-year and you still want to play football, I suggest you get over there at Hancock.

“You will be led by a good man - I've known this man for a long time - and he runs a good program.”

Dutra got the last word.

“I've never had so many compliments - it's awesome to hear that,” he said. “Sometimes you get beat on a bit.”

Dutra has been told that Hancock needs to change its offense, because people know what is coming.

“People may know what we are going to do, but we are going to do it right,” Dutra added. “And all you other coaches here, I'm doing it with your guys - the kids I'm getting out of your programs are polished kids.

“We are plugging them in and they are playing - it's that simple.”

The Bulldogs will be playing in the post-season. At 7-3 and in second place in the Northern Division, they should be in the state playoffs.

“You never know with the JC system what's going to happen,” Dutra said. “We will be in the playoffs or possibly in a bowl game in Santa Barbara, we will have to wait until next Sunday to find out.”

Hancock volleyball coach Julio Molina also made his first-ever appearance at the Roundtable. Named the coach in August, Molina quickly put together a squad and, “we were competitive right away.”

Molina introduced his middle Cassandra Cox and his lobero Anakela Francisco.

“These are two of my defensive leaders since the beginning of the season and they have continued to progress,” Molina said. “I'm pleased with where they are at and I am excited about next year.”

Warrior golfer and sophomore Makayla Mier was the No. 1 golfer in the PAC 7 and helped lead her team to an undefeated regular season and a PAC 7 title.

Last week at Soule Park Golf Club, Mier shot a 77 in the individual prelims. At the individual finals in Pomona on Thursday, she shot the lowest score of all the Central Coast players.

For her efforts, she was named the Female Athlete of the Week.

Mier, playing in Monday's team regional prelims in Oxnard, was not present to pick up her award.

Football coach Gary Wilson likes where his team is right now and feels it is peaking at the right time.

“If we get a win this weekend we will be in the playoffs and the kids are playing up to their potential right now,” Wilson explained. “We feel if we stay on this steady course we will do well in the playoffs.”

The Warriors play Arroyo Grande on Friday.

Wilson presented two offensive linemen, junior Frank Colima - “We are very excited that he is only a junior and will be back next year,” Wilson said - and Brian Brickey, who is an excellent student - “I wish I had 30 guys like him on the team,” Wilson said.

Pioneer Valley

The Panthers football team was surprised at home by Templeton 13-12, which makes its game at Morro Bay this weekend very important. Pioneer Valley is in the playoffs, but head coach Greg Dickinson said the result of the game will decide where the Panthers play.

“It's just a matter of where we go, as a second-place team or as a fourth-place team,” Dickinson said.

Dickinson introduced two players. First was senior center Sam Segoviano, who has been on the football program four years, and the second was junior middle linebacker Jonathan Fuentes.

St. Joseph

Golf coach Dottie Lyons complimented all the athletes in attendance.

“I feel like all of you are stars and it's always a pleasure to hear the coaches talk about you,” she said.

Lyons reported on the five girls who represented the Central Coast in the CIF individuals tournament last week, “Four of the five made it to the second round of individuals.”

She also reported the Knights finished second in the LPL and Danielle Gillaspy was the No. 1 player in the league.

Volleyball coach Tammy Hartman began by thanking the roundtable.

“We made the CIF just so we could come again today,” she said.

Hartman and her husband - football coach Mike Hartman - made the luncheon a family affair, bringing their two sons Will and Scottie.

“They are the most patient people in the Hartman household,” Tammy Hartman said. “They go to practices and games every week and they deserve to come to roundtable at least once a year.”

She introduced two valuable components to the volleyball team, Dayna Drewniak and Mariah Vail. Drewniak is the team leader in kills. She had 16 kills, 12 digs and five aces in the last match against Santa Ynez. Vail had 28 assists in that game, which was a close loss to the league champions.

After finishing second at 9-3, the Knights host Paramount in a first-round game tonight.

“Hopefully we can keep the train rolling,” Hartman said.

The football team finished LPL play with a win over Santa Ynez to finish league undefeated.

“I'm just real proud of our kids,” Mike Hartman said. “We asked them to work hard and they do - and that is why they are successful.

“In the classroom, the weight room and on the practice field, that's what it's all about.”

Hartman introduced junior linebacker Shaun Foster and senior lineman Seth Myers.

Santa Maria

Football coach Mike Pope knows that his team is going in the right direction during this tough first year. And he gave credit to the four seniors he brought to the luncheon - offensive guard Jimmy Gutierrez, outside linebacker Juan Mendez, wide receiver/safety Joey Galavize and running back Sebastian Pedraza.

“These are the types of kids that we need in our program to set the example to the young guys,” Pope said. “They show that hard work is what we have to put in collectively if we are going to turn this thing around.”

The support that Pope has received has also been gratifying.

“I'm proud of the kids, I'm proud of the coaching staff and the community for just staying with us,” he continued. “We got a totally different vibe from the community and that is to keep pushing.”

Valley Christian

Athletic director Pete Fortier said his football team controlled most of the game but was unable to convert five times inside the 20-yard-line.

They fell to Maricopa 26-13, but the score does not indicate how close the game really was.

Fortier introduced two seniors: tailback/cornerback Charles Smith and defensive lineman Jose Nunez.

The volleyball team placed second in the Coast Valley League and host a first-round CIF game tonight against Faith Baptist of Canoga Park.

He introduced senior Jessica Sendejas and junior Augusta Sharp.
