Tenor saxophone player Sonny Rollins will perform at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 in UCSB Campbell Hall.

Revered for his virtuoso solo performances and noted for recording and collaborating with an array of eminent jazz legends before he was 20 years old, Rollins will perform work from his career, including his most recent release, BWithout a Song (The 9/11 Concert).C

The inspiration for Rollins? most recent work came from his haunting proximity to the events of Sept. 11, 2001, when he sat in his apartment building, six blocks north of the World Trade Center, and heard a low-flying plane and a terrifying crash. He watched as the second tower fell and disastrous events continued to unfold.

After being evacuated from his home Sept. 12, Rollins and his band traveled to Boston, the city where the planes had originated, and with the encouragement of his wife, Lucille, he played the city?s first major jazz concert since Sept. 11. The audience responded to Rollins? performance with thunderous applause.

Though he called himself Ba reluctant troubadour,C and claimed that he was in such a state of shock that he cannot remember how the music sounded, he intuited what the forlorn and wounded city needed. Rollins explained, B(T)he experience for me was such a momentous occasion, and I thought it should be documented. The event really added something to the gravitas of the evening.C
