8/5/03 Lompoc will join an estimated 9,800 other communities tonight in celebrating the 20th annual National Night Out, an anti-crime effort that has spread to all 50 states, U. S. territories, Canada and military bases around the world.
Worldwide, an estimated 33 million people are expected to participate in the program, which is designed to heighten crime and drug-prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood spirit and community-police partnerships.
The Lompoc Police Department and the Boys & Girls Club are hosting the celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club, 1025 West Ocean Ave.
Activities will include child fingerprinting, safety information, raffles and a poster contest with the themes of "Crime & Drug Prevention" or "Bicycle Safety." Coloring books, police officer trading cards and free food will be available. Public safety vehicles will be displayed.
"This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity," said National Project Coordinator Matt Peskin in a press release. "National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer nation."
