Remembering a true legacy

When remembering those who have made a true impact in the city of Lompoc, many of us remember Lompoc's first woman mayor. For those who might be newcomers to our Valley, her name was Charlotte Benton.

Charlotte came to our city with nothing, invested wisely and loved Lompoc. Prior to her death, she made arrangements to leave her property and money to the city to make a dream come true. This dream was called "Charlotte's Web."

It was to be a children's library and learning center. As of this date, we have heard of many new plans and spending projects from the city, yet nothing about the projected date for Charlotte's Web to open for the children. Many of us are watching this project, and hoping for a positive outcome in the near future.

Charlotte gave her time, energy, money and legacy to the city to ensure a good start for its children.

As Lompoc's first woman mayor, and one who gave her personal fortune and land to the city, we should strive to make her dream happen after all of these years.
