On Tuesday, it was the Cabrillo volleyball team's senior night at the Cabrillo High gym and all five seniors played a lot. For the two seniors that do not play on a regular basis, it was nice that they were able to contribute.
The Conquistadores defeated the Santa Maria Saints in three games, 25-12, 25-14, 25-18 in a Los Padres League matchup.
Phoebe Huggins had six kills, tied for team high with her sister Chloe, and Summer Galvin added three kills and a service ace, to lead the way. The two seniors are spot players, but were starters Tuesday and both played well.
Cabrillo jumped out to an early lead in game one, leading at one time 12-3, then rolling to a 25-9 win. In game two things were close at 13-10 before the Conqs were able to pull away.
In the third game, Cabrillo began a run at 7-6 that led to a 24-12 lead. But, the never say die Saints made a run, pulling to within 24-18, before Chloe Huggins ended things with a kill.
Santa Maria's Jeana Weatherhead only registered one kill, but her play at the net was excellent. Weatherhead had five blocks and while working at the net, made Cabrillo alter their kill attempts forcing several balls wide for Saints points.
Cabrillo had a balanced attack, with eight different players scoring kills and five getting service aces. After the Huggins sisters, Kelly O'Connell registered four kills, followed by Kiley Shae Aldridge and Galvin with three, Jenna Hilliard and Tiffany Lee with two and Jessica Rucinski with one.
Kristina Goodchild had a great game serving. She had 14 service winners including seven aces. Hilliard and Chloe Huggins each had three aces while Rucinski and Galvin scored one each.
With the win Cabrillo moved to 5-4 in the LPL, one game ahead of idle Templeton for the final playoff spot. Cabrillo plays in a crucial match at St. Joseph on Thursday, while the Eagles host Santa Ynez.
If the Conqs win and Templeton loses, that would give the Conqs a two game lead with games against Morro Bay and Santa Ynez remaining.
The Saints will host Morro Bay on Thursday.

Lompoc, led by Brandy Machado's three kills and four blocks, fell to 1-9 in the Los Padres League and 2-12 overall. Erika Slikker added two kills and six digs for the Braves.
