The Lompoc Valley Distance Club donated ,3,000 to the John Trettin Memorial Scholarship Fund on Monday, Oct. 24. The money is proceeds from the 2005 Valley of the Flowers Half-Marathon. It was presented by half-marathon race director Betty Lee to Gail Trettin, overseer of the Trettin fund.

The Trettin Fund was set up in memory of local distance runner John Trettin. The fund awards four college scholarships annually to Lompoc Valley high school graduates.

The distance club donated proceeds from the half-marathon to the Lompoc Valley Resource Center (LOVARC) and to the Lompoc Valley Boys and Girls Club in recent years. The club plans to set up its own scholarship fund with proceeds from the half-marathon in 2006.

&#8220Running is such a positive mental and physical endeavor that we wanted to extend the positive energy to young men and women who want to further their education,C said Lee.
