The highlight of the North Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table Luncheon Monday was Cabrillo/s blue chip performance at the Ojai Invitational cross country meet.
Cabrillo finished 1-2-3-4.
The Conquistadores, whose eyes are locked on a state title, were hoping to meet up with Barstow, the one team ranked ahead of them in the CIF/s Southern Section.
"They were there last year," first place finisher Michael Coe remembered.
But the Aztecs didn/t show up.
"So we didn/t have a lot of competition," Coe said. Unless you consider the other 250 runners.
Coe took first, Colin Hacker second, Jeff Monteleone third and Miguel Ortiz fourth.
Less than one minute separated the four.
Coe ran most of the race alone, he said.
"We could have run smarter. We didn/t pack it as much as we should have. When we have more competition, we/ll need to do that."

Cabrillo coach Don Cross noted that his Conqs overtook Pacifica of Oxnard in the fourth quarter. "They outplayed us for three quarters," he said.
"With six minutes left, we got a big turnover when Colby McKissack put a big time hit on the quarterback and Jake Farley fell on it."
From there Braves quarterback Brian Gregory drove the team 65 yards to a touchdown 7 narrowing the CHS deficit to 20-14.
The defense held the Tritons to three plays and Cabrillo began its final drive of 70 yards with less than four minutes left.
Wingback Darnell Womack made a key 20-yard run and Gregory passed for the TD with 23 seconds left to Troy Deleissegues.
Cross presented both Gregory and C.J. Simmons to the crowd.
Simmons started at quarterback where he picked up 41 yards rushing, then moved to wide receiver where he snagged a seven-yard pass, posted return yardage, and broke up a 2-point conversion attempt in the end zone, Cross recounted. Gregory completed eight of 11 passes.
Lompoc High
LHS Athletic Director Dick Barrett introduced cornerback Sean Webb, safety Tommy Hayes and center Eric Talavera.
"It was gang tackling," said Hayes in explaining the Lompoc defense holding Righetti to three points and limiting Warrior running back Chad Stephens to 94 yards.
"We try to get four or five hats on the ball. It wears people down. Especially when you carry the ball as much as he does."
The game/s turning point was the goalline stand early in the second quarter, Hayes said.
Barrett reacted to the surprise expressed by fans at the Braves/ four TD passes.
"People think we don/t know how to pass," Barrett said. "Hey, we practice that stuff too."
Barrett also introduced cross country runners Carrie Fabing and Lexie Warrick. Fabing finished fifth from among 150 runners at the Ojai Invitational Saturday while Warrick came in 11th and teammate Stephanie Fabing13th.
Allan Hancock College
Football coach Kris Dutra brought two Lompoc players for the second straight week7 tight end Matt Sims, who Dutra said "was the reason we moved the ball in the second half," and linebacker Rick Aguilar who left Saturday/s Santa Barbara City College game with a knee injury. Aguilar said he thought it was just a bruise. "I/m hoping so, at least," he said.
The Bulldogs took control in the second half despite the best efforts of Vaquero guard Caleb Coupland of Lompoc.
AHC soccer coach Al Garcia talked of his team/s sparkling start which includes a victory over Fresno City College which was ranked No. 4 in the nation.
On the team are Matt McDonald, Chris Thiele and goalkeeper Omar Pimentel. "They/ll be starting next year," Garcia predicted.
