"It hurts," said Peter Anderson.
With those words Anderson, the Cabrillo High running coach, won Sunday's Park-to-Park 8-Mile Run in Lompoc.
Anderson, 45, led from start to finish, clocking 46 minutes and 15 seconds on the fast course from Miguelito Canyon Park on the south side of the Lompoc Valley to La Purisima Mission on the north side.
Anderson, who has been running 50 miles a week with the CHS boys, got some speed work Saturday while trying to keep an eye on the progress of the Conquistadores as they swept to victory at the prep Ojai Cross Country Invitational. There, CHS/s Michael Coe, Colin Hacker, Jeff Monteleone and Miguel Ortiz went 1-through-4 at the front of the pack.
"I'm barely varsity on that team," Anderson quipped.
The coach was definitely the cream of the crop Sunday, finishing well ahead of second place Mickey Rowe/s 48:40. "Well, I was faster than last year," said Rowe, a 41-year-old UC Santa Barbara teacher who lives in Lompoc.
Pauline Schneekloth of Buellton paced the women in 60:34. "I/m feeling all of my 48 years," she grimaced.
Twenty seven stalwarts finished the run, which was organized by race directors Kathi Froemming and Neil Smoots.
The event was the last on the calendar year for the Lompoc Valley Distance Club. Next up for runners in the Lompoc Valley7 Lompoc Parks and Recreation/s Turkey Trot in November at River Park.
