The Lompoc Braves/ Lexie Warrick learned what a hat trick is as she scored three goals in the Brave girls soccer team/s 8-0 trouncing of Coast Union Thursday afternoon at Lompoc High.
Lompoc is now 3-0-1 in the early non-league season.
Warrick, a senior forward, found the net in the fourth minute on a cross by Jani Carmona, in the ninth on a cross by Ariel Francis and in the 16th minute of the second half on pass from Lindsey Eckersley.
The three goals represented Warrick/s first-ever hat trick. She had never accomplished the feat before 7 even in youth soccer.
When Brave coach Addie Francis swiped assistant Alfredo Garcia/s hat to signal to Warrick her accomplishment, the veteran began to laugh.
“I didn/t even know what a hat trick was,C she grinned.
Lompoc/s other goals were by Merle Villegas who scored twice, on passes from Ariel Francis and Paige Chase, by Ariel Francis, who also scored twice on passes from Amanda Russ and Chase, and by goalkeeper Renee Block assisted by Chase. After halftime, coach Francis put Ashley Davis in goal and moved Block to midfield 7 and she put one in the net.
Neither Block nor Davis had to block a shot while defending the Braves/ goal.
The contest was shortened when an injury to the Coast Union goalie required attention.
“We ended up calling the game between 10- and 15-minutes early because their goal keeper got injured,C said coach Francis. “Unfortunatley, my daughter, Ariel, went in to kick the ball and the Coast Union goalie went to block it and Arel ended up hitting her in the chest and face. But she/ll be OK 7 it was just an unfortunate accident.C
Lompoc visits Atascadero in the Braves/ final non-league tuneup on Monday, then opens Los Padres League play on Tuesday hosting Morro Bay.
Cabrillo 2, Templeton 0
At Cabrillo, the Conquistadores posted their third consecutive victory.
Karissa Robertson put the Conqs on top 26 minutes into the contest after taking a pass from Jessica Shekell and grounding it into the cage.
Cabrillo could not score again until 7 with three minutes to play 7 Shekell got behind the defense and took a long pass from Kara Avillanoza. She let fly from 30 yards out over the goalie/s head into the net.
Cabrillo had many more scoring opportunities. The Q/s shot 15 times to only three for the Eagles.
“We were very, very flat today,C grimaced Cabrillo coach Derrick Wong. “We weren/t in sync. We can/t afford to have one of these when league starts next week.C
The Conquistadores will take their 3-1 record and open league play on Tuesday at new Los Padres League member Pioneer Valley.
On Thursday, they will have a stronger foe in defending league champion Santa Ynez. That game will be held at Cabrillo.
The Cabrillo JV team won 3-0.
Boys soccer
Cabrillo 4, Templeton 0
At Templeton on a muddy field, Oscar Torres scored twice to lead Cabrillo to its third consecutive triumph in the pre-league season.
Adrian Espinoza netted Cabrillo/s first goal unassisted in the 30th minute and two minutes later Mikey Seelandt netted his seventh of the season to give Cabrillo a 2-0 halftime lead. Seelandt was assisted by Jorge Aguirre.
Torres took over in the second half with a goal off a pass from Seelandt and another off a throw-in from Seelandt.
“We played a pretty good game,C said Cabrillo coach Dan McGahey. “We/re coming along.C
Cabrillo now sports a 3-2 record with two games on tap Saturday at the Carpinteria Cup, then their league opener on Tuesday vs. Pioneer Valley.
Lompoc 5, Coast Union 0
The Lompoc Braves shuffled their lineup and tamed the Coast Union Broncos on their own field.
Jaymo Baca 7 moved from midfield to forward 7 led the Lompoc attack with three goals. Cesar Vasquez scored two as the pair alternated goals.
Baca split two defenders to get free and score the first in the 15th minute. Vasquez notched the second on Daniel Elizondo/s first varsity assist, then Baca took a cross from Vasquez to score. Vasquez found the net off a Luis Marquez pass then Baca finished up off an indirect kick assisted by Rolando Beltran.
“We/re hitting our stride,C asserted Lompoc coach Rick McDonald. “We found a mix that works.C
McDonald credited the midfield play of Marquez and Cesar Hernandez which freed Baca to move back to forward where he earned all-league honors last season.
Now 4-4-2, the Braves host Atascadero on Monday in non-league action.
