A former Lompoc star shut down the current Lompocans with a complete game 6-hitter to snap the Lompoc Bandits/ 20-game winning streak and give the Goleta Diablos a leg up in the Santa Barbara Baseball League championship series.
At Santa Barbara High Sunday Hip Arias, a onetime Lompoc High and North Dakota college standout, mixed his fastball and slider to beat the Bandits 5-0 by allowing only five singles over eight innings. He walked only one while striking out four.
Meanwhile former Hancock College and UCSB player Donnie Warrecker boomed a two-run home run in the fifth inning off Lompoc starter Ryan Day to give the defending champion Diablos all the offense they needed.
Actually the single run they picked up in the first inning turned out to be all that was necessary. They added another tally in the sixth off Day, then a final run in the eighth off reliever Mike Bennett.
”Hip has always been a good pitcher,B said Bennett, the Bandit manager. ”He was really on today. He was hitting his spots.B
Day gave up eight hits over seven innings, three of them to Warrecker who had a 3-for-4 day.
Jason Green doubled and singled to lead the Bandits and John Salter contributed two singles.
Bennett had hoped to start former Cuesta College closer Jake Marshall on the mound next Sunday but learned late Sunday the righthander will not be available. Thus Bennett himself will open with Day pitching the second game if it is necessary.
The first team to win two games wins the series. The Diablos were the SBBL titlists in 2004 while the Bandits won this year/s regular season race.
Game time Sunday at SBHS is 10 a.m.
