Several schools skipped the weekly Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable luncheon at Giavanni's Monday, because most of the schools were not open to students because of a teacher in-services day.

But a few schools did make an appearance, including the ones with the two Athletes of the Week.

One was a repeat winner while the other won for the first time.

Valley Christian Academy's Drew Schettler is having a terrific senior season for the school's football team.

Last Saturday, the Lions clinched first place in the Coast Valley League with a 34-18 win over North County Christian. The Lions (6-1-1, 3-0 CVL) were once again led by Schettler.

He ran for 204 yards on 27 carries with four touchdowns on offense. On defense Schettler intercepted two passes and registered eight tackles.

It was the second time this season that he has won the award.

"First I have to give the glory to God for the outcome," Schettler began, " then my teammates for the blocking and my coach for the play calls."

He also wished everyone good luck during the rest of the season.

St. Joseph volleyball player Analise Reizebos had a huge game last Thursday against Cabrillo. In the four-game victory, Reizebos single-handedly held the Conqs at bay when they started a big comeback.

Reizebos had 14 kills and eight blocks for points in the win. She also registered eight kills in a win over Lompoc on Tuesday.

For helping the Knights stay in second in the Los Padres League, Reizebos was named the female Athlete of the Week for her first time.

"I want to thank my coaches, they are awesome," Reizebos said, "so are my teammates - they make my job a lot easier."

Valley Christian

Athletic Director and football coach Pete Fortier was proud of the way his team responded Saturday against North County Christian.

"I was concerned after winning a big game the week before and playing North County at their place," he explained. "When we got there they scored on us right away, but we buckled down, had a couple scores in the first quarter to take the lead, then never looked back."

Fortier also introduced two brothers who play on the line for the Lions, junior Bryson Scheetz and freshman Dylan.

Hancock College

Football coach Kris Dutra talked more about action on the sidelines than on the field after his Bulldogs defeated Glendale 55-27.

"One of their coaches got out of control and had to be removed from the facility - it was kind of funny," Dutra explained. "The official threw a flag and one of their coaches picked the flag up and threw it right back."

Dutra presented sophomore wide receiver Marguelo Suel who has 41 receptions for 700 yards.

The Bulldogs play at Ventura Saturday in their last game of the regular season.

"They are all that stands in our way of making the playoffs for the second straight year," Dutra said.

The game will be an audio webcast on santamariatimes.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.

Righetti

The Warriors remained undefeated in the PAC-7 with a win last Friday over San Luis Obispo, due to the defense which is surrendering only eight points a game.

"We are real excited about where we are at," head coach Gary Wilson said. "Our defense is playing extremely well.

Wilson introduced middle linebacker Cody Berry, who leads the team in tackles, and outside linebacker Brandon Escobedo from the defense.

He also presented center Chase Deasee.

St. Joseph

Football coach Mike Hartman talked about three sports; football, volleyball and cross country.

Starting with cross country, he introduced freshman Bridget Adam, "a solid number two runner for us," and junior Alexis Brandt, "a three year varsity runner."

Hartman then presented junior Quetta Peinado, who won the Santa Barbara County Meet last week in Lompoc.

Hartman thanked Reizebos for doing so well for the Knights.

"I appreciate everything she does," Hartman explained, "because when the girls do well, my beloved wife (volleyball coach Tammy Hartman) is happy and life is good.

"So personally, thank you Analise."

From football Hartman brought running back Anthony Ibarra, who rushed for 160 yards on 24 carries with two touchdowns, tight end Mitch McNulty and center Dominic Galassi.

St. Joseph travels to Santa Ynez Friday.

"Goofy weird things always happen at Santa Ynez," Hartman said.

Santa Maria

Cross country coach Maurice Sipes congratulated Pienado for winning at the Santa Barbara County meet.

He introduced senior Israel Ruvalcaba, the team's number one runner for the past three years.

Ruvalcaba won the mid-season race at River Park in Lompoc recently.

Lompoc, Cabrillo, Santa Ynez and Pioneer Valley were not at the luncheon due to the in-services day.
